TRANSGENDER & NON-BINARY RUNNER POLICY
Gender Inclusion & Participation Policy
Alpine Running is committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all participants. Every athlete deserves the opportunity to compete as their authentic self, free from discrimination, harassment, or exclusion. This policy outlines Alpine Running’s standards regarding gender identity, non-binary and transgender participation, elite-level eligibility, and expected conduct.

Commitment to Inclusivity
Alpine Running and its organizers do not tolerate hateful, discriminatory, or harassing behavior by runners, volunteers, spectators, or any individuals associated with our events—regardless of the circumstance or cause.
We uphold a culture grounded in respect, honesty, compassion, and integrity. All participants are expected to treat each other with dignity. Challenges or disputes based on an athlete’s gender identity will not be entertained or permitted.

Alpine Running respects and supports athletes of all gender identities, including transgender, non-binary, gender-nonconforming, and intersex individuals. Participants are encouraged to register and compete according to their self-identified gender, consistent with our commitment to inclusion.
Entrance Policy for Transgender Athletes
Alpine Running welcomes transgender athletes at all levels of participation. The following guidelines outline eligibility for all race divisions, including elite-level competition.
Gender Declaration
Alpine Running will accept each entrant’s self-declared gender at face value.
No additional documentation or proof of gender identity is required for general race participation.
Participation in Elite Competition
Transgender women may register to compete in the elite women’s division if:
-
They have undergone continuous, medically supervised hormone therapy for gender transition for at least one (1) year prior to race day.

Transgender men may register to compete in the elite men’s division.
-
Transgender men may not compete in any women’s divisions if they have begun a gender-transition hormone treatment that includes testosterone or any other substance banned under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regulations.

Participation Based on Sex Assigned at Birth
Runners who have not undergone hormone treatment may choose to race in the category corresponding to their sex assigned at birth.

Optional Medical Documentation
Transgender entrants may voluntarily provide medical documentation related to their transition to the Race Director prior to the event.
This is not required unless needed to verify eligibility for an elite division as outlined above.

Privacy & Confidentiality
Alpine Running is committed to protecting athlete privacy. All information regarding:
-
Gender identity

Any documentation submitted under this policy will be kept strictly confidential and shared only with authorized personnel responsible for enforcing race eligibility requirements.
Entrance Policy for Non-Binary Athletes
Alpine Running is dedicated to ensuring a respectful and inclusive experience for non-binary athletes. Non-binary individuals may not exclusively identify as “man” or “woman” and may experience their gender in diverse ways. Alpine Running recognizes and respects this diversity.
Registration
-
Ultrasignup now provides a non-binary gender option.
-
Athletes are encouraged to register using the gender option that best reflects their identity.
-
Participants with existing accounts may need to update their profile to indicate non-binary status.
Awards & Podiums
If participation levels warrant a top-three finish within the non-binary division, Alpine Running will establish a Non-Binary Podium to be presented alongside the Men’s and Women’s Podiums. Non-binary athletes may also be eligible for prize money at levels consistent with Men's & Women's divisions; however, due to limited participant pool and to ensure that prize money is reserved for athletes performing at the highest competitive standards, additional criteria apply.

Non-binary athletes are eligible for prize money only if established competitive standards are met. These standards are intended to:
-
Reflect recorded top finishing times for the event
-
Ensure parity with elite-level performance in the Men’s and Women’s divisions
-
Preserve the competitive integrity of prize distribution
Competitive standards will be based on recorded elite race data.To qualify for prize awards, non-binary athletes must meet these standards in addition to securing a podium position within the non-binary division.

Conduct Expectations
To maintain a positive race environment, all participants must:
-
Refrain from discriminatory, inflammatory, or harassing behavior.
-
Respect each participant’s self-identified gender without challenge or dispute.
-
Demonstrate sportsmanship and uphold the integrity of the trail-running community.
Violations of this policy may result in removal from the event and potential disqualification from future races.

Policy Review
Alpine Running regularly evaluates this policy to ensure it reflects evolving best practices, community needs, and athlete feedback. We welcome constructive dialogue as we continue fostering an equitable and inclusive race environment.
